Question:
Corporations across the United States and Europe in virtu- ally every industry now outsource business processes to Mexico, China, the Philippines, India, and other countries, citing greater efficiency and the potential for improved customer service. Companies may refer to this process as “transformational outsourcing,” which they say stimulates corporate growth and makes more efficient use of U.S. employees. Outsourcing companies say it is not simply about hiring cheaper labor outside the United States and that efficiency, productivity, quality, and revenue gains are enjoyed when the talents of offshore employees are utilized.
The flip side of this argument is that U.S. workers face job loss when outsourcing occurs. Highly educated technical and service workers in the countries mentioned
above typically work for a far lower hourly rate and may also work harder and longer.
