Question:
Remember that research and critical thinking are key. There's so much to write about... the 1st amendment, how advertisting spending affects consumer prices, the ethics of companies spending so much money to advertise when money can be used for things such as feeding and housing the homeless, medical care for all, inventing a new medication that will save lives, etc. Why do so many people watch sporting events yet most people cannot name a single living scientist?
Those are just a few thoughts off of the top of my head. But as you can hopefully see, the economics behind charging 7 million dollars for 30 seconds of TV is mind boggling. Perhaps you even want to bring in how much politicians spend on TV and internet ad buying. There is a presidential election this year and like all previous elections, more money will be spent than ever before. Politicians like to brag about how much money they raise to spend on advertising, but is that something that should be bragged about? What would happen if the money was spent on things mentioned above (homelessness, healthcare, etc)? What would happen if sports players did not make hundreds of millions of dollars for playing a game?
If you notice, the common theme here is that it all comes back to advertising. And if a company pays millions to advertise, then the price of their product needs to rise to cover the advertising cost, therefor the consumer ultimately pays for it.
