2 days ago Chapter 4 COLLAPSE Today at work I interacted with a new patient. I wanted to come across as calm, professional, and confident, especially since it was their first time at our office. On the front stage, I made sure to keep a friendly tone, greeted them with a smile, and explained things clearly. What they didn't see was my back stage. I had just rushed from handling a stressful situation with another patient and I was feeling overwhelmed. Before calling the next person in, I took a second in the hallway to breathe and reset my expression. I didn't want that stress to show. In that moment, I was doing everything I could to manage the impression I was giving off. A time I couldn't manage an impression was during a morning huddle at work, my manager brought up an idea I had shared with her privately the day before, but she acted like it was her own and didn't acknowledge me at all. I was caught off guard and couldn't hide my reaction. I started making faces while she was still talking, and a few coworkers noticed. One even messaged me later asking if something was wrong. I normally keep it together during meetings, but in that moment, I was frustrated and it showed. I lost control of the impression I usually try to maintain in front of my team. Reply
