Investigators follow specific procedures while gather evidence for it to be useful and legally useful in a court. The evidence is important because it tells a story of facts regarding who was involved, what happened, where it took place, when did it happened, and why did the crime occur. Everything must be documented, recorded, and handled with so much care. Which includes avoiding cross contamination and following chains of commands, so that there are no gaps of the evidence being unaccounted for at any time if it will be used in a court setting. One of the cases that comes to mind to me is the JonBenet Ramsey 1996 cold case. Just from the start of the police officer failed to secure the scene. Based on the records the initial officer arrived at 6am, the home was not properly searched, and the scene was not cleared and secured until around 1:05pm (after the body was found). That gave family members and other friends of the family at least 7 hours minimum to walk around the house and contaminate the initial crime scene, since at the time she had only been assumed "kidnapped". Then when her body is finally discovered by a family member, that person touched the body, picked her up, and ripped evidence off her. Because of the lack of procedures, this case has not been able to be solved
