So, in this discussion I will use my own experience and opinion of someone who drove part time for Uber and Lyft. One of the first issues I faced was really knowing how to respond to so many people coming in and out of your car as well as knowing the expectations other than trying to be friendly. Uber just had you send in your paperwork through their app. With Lyft you had to drive somewhere and meet a "trainer" that made sure your vehicle had things like a car newer than 2010 with minimal damage, seat belts, good brakes, and good tires. Uber never really mandated you with many policies other than not picking up anyone younger than 18 years of age and to be a safe driver. You were rated by the customer and sometimes regardless of how good you were, you could have a customer who affected your overall score. I am sure they built algorithms in the app that if there were say 10 drivers in a certain location, than there was a forced comparison algorithm based on individual ranking to determine who would get the long drives vs the quick one and done trips. This is a ethical concern because a score cannot be 100% right all the time when you have disgruntled customers due to another driver cancelling their ride etc. As far as other problems I faced was that sometimes I was nervous to go in certain areas in the city due to the high crime and if you didn't hit yes when it pinged you, then you could get a negative score as well as lose out on any perks during that hour. The number of hours you drive with miles and waiting in your car makes this less of a profitable situation unless this is your only job. You don't think about the overall damage that being a uber driver does to your vehicle, but it does damage. There is no real benefits and as far as social status, I question if that is even a concern.
