The topic that I enjoyed learning most about this week was the importance of the role of the microscope in decreasing mortality rates. Life expectancy used to be very short. Adults rarely lived past 40 and there was a 50% chance for kids to live past 15 years old. The main cause of high mortality and low life expectancies was disease and infection. The microscope was invented around the 1830s and this brand-new invention provided proof that germs were real and diseases are easily transmitted. And as time went on doctors and scientists were able to come out with medicine and vaccines that helped combat these diseases and infections which led to higher life expectancies and fewer deaths of people. Of course, other aspects when into higher life expectancy and fewer mortalities, but I found the role of the microscope to be the most interesting.

Hi @Zarin Webb, learning about the technology and microscopes was probably the most compelling fact I learned about in Mr. Bjorklund's lecture. We've come so far with it today that I cannot imagine life without it. Ha, I mean, half of us probably wouldn't be alive if they hadn't invented it (sorry crude joke), but in all seriousness, I'm glad we have it, and technology keeps advancing to learn more about microorganisms.
