When it comes employers being able to track their employees via company-issued GPS-enabled smartphones, I believe it depends on the type of employer/business it might be. For instance, if it's a delivery company, it would be easier for a company to be able to track an employee and know how far a package is from reaching a client, rather than calling the employee and risking distraction, thus putting the driver at risk.
On the topic of social media, I believe there should be clear guidelines and policies as to what is acceptable social media behavior. Sure, our social media accounts are personal, however, in my opinion, wherever we go and whatever we do, we are representing our workplace. This might include our social media content as well.
Personally, I don't like having co-workers on my personal social media accounts because I don't need my co-workers knowing my personal business. Work is work, personal is personal, and my employer needs to trust that when and while I am at work, I am using my time wisely and responsibly and I am taking care of my work and assignments in a timely manner and with accuracy. If incomplete work within a reasonable timeframe becomes an issue, then there needs to be some investigating on the root cause of why the work is not getting done.
Where to draw the line? Good question. I just think, as already stated, that clear social media policies regarding behavior could be a way of addressing the issue. As far as the smart phone tracking, that should happen depending on the nature of the job, and it should be clearly stated via policies as well
