Report Guidelines

The data set you will use will be a compilation of all the students in the class. You will turn in your data collection sheets to the instructor who will provide you with an Excel spreadsheet of the data. If you have any questions, ask us. Below are a detailed list of the analysis you must perform and some guidelines for your conclusions/discussion section. These areminimumrequirements! Do not forget to address any of these.

  1. Results: These include but are not limited to:
  • Calculate the percentage of people remembering each word for each list. Make a table of serial position vs. list (making sure to keep the percentages in serial order - the order in which they were presented).
  • Calculate the percentage of people for number of words remembered for each list. Make a table of number of words remembered vs. list.
  • Graph the number of people remembering with serial order on the X-axis and percentage on the Y-axis.This will result in three graphs, one for each list.
  • Graph the number of words remembered for each list, with number of words on the X-axis and percentage on the Y-axis, for another set of 3 graphs.
  • Create a table identifying the number and percentage of words remembered per list by each gender.(Note: you could combine this table with a previous table(s).)
  • Perform the following hypothesis tests:
  • Determine if the number or percentage of words remembered for each list differed. Since there are 3 lists, you will have to perform a post hoc analysis to determine which list(s) were different (or perform multiple hypothesis test to consider all combinations).
  • Determine if gender differences existed in the number or percentage of words remembered. Since there are 3 lists and 2 genders, you will have to perform a post hoc analysis to determine which list(s) were different (or perform multiple hypothesis test to consider all combinations).
  1. Discussion/Conclusions:This section should include but is not limited to:
  • Comment on the differences between the graphs. Were the primacy and recency effects obvious in the first 3 graphs of words remembered? Was there any change in the primacy effect over these three graphs? Was there any change in the recency effect over these three graphs? Speculate on the reasons for these differences, if any.
  • Discuss how many words you would predict that people would remember, and why. Did this prediction hold true over these three lists? Were there any differences in the number of words remembered between the three lists? Speculate on why or why not.
  • Were there gender differences? Did you expect that there would be? Why or why not?
  • Discuss any practical design implications that might result from this experiment. Formulate 3-5 design principles based on the results of this experiment. Your design principles should all relate to the same field you could discuss training, lecturing in a classroom, software interfaces, or a field of your choice.
