Reporting Assignment #2: Profile Someone You Don't Know750 to 900 words.

Write a profile of someone you don't know. You may choose someone you admire, someone in your field of study, or contact me and I can pair you with a classmate taking this course. Schedule a time to meet and interview them ASAP so you have time to write.

Profiles spend an entire story focused on one person, and the reader comes away feeling like they've met them. Profiles have descriptive writing and often start with an anecdotal or feature lead: it's not the 5 Ws and H. Be sure to check out the module which has links to example profile stories.

You will want to do some research on your subject ahead of this interview, to see if there are things you should be asking about. Don't go into the interview without knowing anything, if you can avoid it!

You will ALSO need to interview at least one other person who knows your subject. It could be a roommate, parent, sibling, professor, boss, friend. Once you interview your subject, you'll get some ideas and you'll need to get contact info so you can reach out and schedule something. You are welcome to interview more than one person. (Hearing from other voices not only adds value to your story, I find many great quotes help you get to that larger word count threshold, too!)

Requirements:

  • 750-900 words. The headline is not included in this count.
  • A headline with an active verb and is fewer than eight words.
  • All interviews must be conducted in person or via Zoom, FaceTime, video chat, or phone. No email interviews allowed.
  • You must include quotes from your subject you are profiling AND at least one other person you interview. Make sure they are formatted according to AP style.
  • Profiles end with strong closing lines. Make sure you end on a high note with a great, punchy quote or detail.
  • A source list with who you interviewed, their name/title/etc. and contact information.
