The objective of this project is to build a 15% scale model of the 7-passenger space plane the Dream Chaser?m. The Dream Chaser TM introduces many areas of improvement upon the current space shuttle and is intended to become the next generation shuttle. Several key innovations and areas of improvement include: a hybrid propulsion system, lower operation costs, reduced g-force loads during re-entry, superior stability and lifting characteristics during atmospheric reentry and landing. Analysis of approach and landing behavior will then improve the level of safety for the pilots. Testing the Dream Chaser4 vehicle's performance during low-speed flight and landing conditions is a crucial step in developing the final spacecraft design. The controls system of the model is run by remote control. The Dream Chaser ms has seven control surfaces. Servos will be connected to each of the control surfaces to actuate them. A stability augmentation system or autopilot system may be required for long range control of the model during a flight test, but both are beyond the scope of this project. Structural load testing, controls system testing, and electronics systems tests will verify the flight test readiness of the vehicle. The project timeline, from the preliminary design to completion of manufacturing and testing of the model is 32 weeks. The objective of this project is to deliver to SNC a geometrically and dynamically properly sealed 15% model of the Dream Chaser M that shall be capable of multiple flight tests. The 15% seale model will be 4.5 feet long, with a wingspan no greater than 3 feet. The Dream Chaser IM is being considered for production for three main reasons: assured manned access to spaces, enhanced crew safety, and affordable costs. Unlike the Space Shuttle, the Dream Chaser IM would not have main propulsion engines or a large payload bay, so by removing large payload-carrying requirements from personnel delivery missions, the Dream Chaser would be a small, compact vehicle. It is then more feasible to design an abort capability to safely recover the crew during critical phases of launch and return from orbit. Also, since this is a small vehicle designed with available technologies, the Dream Chaser M is forecasted to have a low development cost. In addition, subsystem simplification and an aircraft approach to the ground and flight operations lower the operating costs of the vehicle
