The literature review describes the "literature" about your research topic. The literature review helps you blend, combine or integrate literature on your topic because in the process of writing a literature review, you learn to (1) identify important issues/questions raised in the articles you found, and (2) sort and categorize experts' views according to the issues/questions identified in the articles you found. Your literature review will become part of your research proposal. How do we synthesize (blend, combine or integrate) sources? Literature reviews synthesize information and present it in an organized fashion. Synthesis means to put together, and occurs when two or more things are combined to create something new -- a new idea, or a new piece of writing. In this assignment, you will be combining material from three sources- your literature review. Using a table or chart of common points found in your three articles is critical to helping you synthesize the material. This will ensure that your literature review is organized by subtopic, not by source. Therefore, each paragraph of the literature review will mention several different authors.
