Looting represents an extremely dangerous threat to the preservation and curation of archeological and historically relevant cultural sites. It causes harmful, long-lasting damage that warps our understanding of the past. Some impacts that I will briefly discuss include Loss of Context, Destruction of Important Sites, Black-Market Trade, and Cultural Heritage Loss. Loss of Context: Archeological artifacts are all about context. Where an object was found, what it were found with, and the condition of the environment around it. All these factors help us to identify and determine the uses for items found at dig sites. When looters remove items from a site, they remove this context and the artifacts are made meaningless to scientific discovery. This loss of context also severely hinders our ability to reconstruct past cultures and events. Destruction of Sites: Looters often use extreme methods when extracting artifacts. From digging and tunneling by hand to the use of heavy machinery, these methods destroy archeological sites and obliterate features such as building foundations, burial sites and stratigraphic layers that could be used to date a site. Black-Market Trade: Stolen artifacts often end up on the black market and make their way to private collections from there.
