respond to discussion post with a few sentences.

While theories X and Y are vastly different in their approaches to understanding people and their motivations, I do think that there are some truths to both theories. Personally, I believe that theory Y is more effective than theory X in about 90% of situations. My wife works in education, and she has many up close and personal experiences seeing the effectiveness in each of these theories. When she comes home and tells me stories of how things went, the positive interactions she shares with me where she actually feels effective and connected to the students are when she applies theory Y to the situation. There are moments (and specific students) that she applies theory X to that have better results than theory Y would.

One example that came to mind when thinking of a leader who exemplified Theory X is Joseph Stalin. While Stalin's policies effectively and rapidly industrialized the USSR, they came at enormous human cost millions of deaths, repression, and a culture of fear. His leadership is an extreme example of how Theory X assumptions can drive control and efficiency but destroy morale and human welfare.

An example that I thought of for a leader who demonstrated Theory Y is President Franklin D. Roosevelt - particularly during the great depression and the second World War. During the Great Depression and World War II, FDR consistently showed confidence in ordinary citizens' ability to contribute ideas, take initiative, and rise to challenges. Roosevelt's faith in people's intrinsic motivation helped restore national morale, encouraged civic participation, and fostered innovation that reshaped the American economy and government.

I absolutely believe that a leader can have both Theory X and Theory Y qualities. I would actually find it harder to believe that a leader operated only by one or the other. As I stated in the beginning of my post, I think that both theories have good qualities to them and that a leader would benefit from adopting the best of each style.
