In recent years technology has taken off. We have created so many new ways to communicate and gain information. Apps such as Snap Chat and Instagram have taken flight in ways that we now communicate around the world. Access to these apps has become a key part in day to day life. But what about the sinister part of these apps?

Social media has become a breeding ground for computer crimes and pornography. These offenses have become extremely common. Computer crimes are mainly targeted to try and scam small business owners. These scams can consist of a scammer posing as an influencer and asking for the business to send the scammer products to review; after the products are sent for free the business then realizes it has been scammed.

Pornography is most frequently spread throughout social media without one of the participants knowledge. This can lead to sexual predatory charges, child porn charges, and more. Spreading pornography may also lead to someone being put a sex offender registry list. The spreading of pornography can ruin peoples lives in a matter of seconds.

In my opinion I feel as though our courts are not doing enough to protect people online. Social media almost aids in cyber crimes because it is so hard to trace just exactly what happened. Technology is advancing so quickly that it is becoming more and more difficult for our justice system to keep up.

Cyber crime laws have been put into action to try and help lessen the damage done when a computer crime is committed. "... cyber security laws ... are designed to lessen the material harms from criminal breaches of private data should a cyber crime occur, and/or minimize private vulnerability to cyber crime" (Katharina.kiener-Manu). In short; these laws are basically to lessen the amount of money/products harmed or stolen from the scammers. I still feel like this is not enough. We need to figure out a better solution than just trying to reward people with their money back.
