Problem Statement The LGBTQ+ population experiences increased health disparities, anxiety during health care visits, and avoidance of seeking health care due to previous poor experiences that include prejudice and a lack of provider understanding regarding LGBTQ+ and gender identity issues (Stage & Ruben, 2024). Research Problem There is a lack of knowledge regarding the potential of LGBTQ+ community members to feel comfortable sharing their sexual orientation or gender identity compared to the cisgender heterosexual community members in health care settings in the emergency department, primary care clinic, or a specialty care clinic. Literature Search Strategies and Tools | used the APAPsycArticles database using the keywords homosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer, with additional keywords healthcare, health care, hospital, health services, or health facilities (OASIS, n.d.a). Using a broad keyword base increases the potential for exposure to various peer-reviewed articles that are relevant to the thematic representation of the problem statement, further increasing the opportunity to find and refine a research gap. | further refined the search to include only peer-reviewed scholarly articles within the past 5 years. This returned a total of 35 articles. Many of the articles included the adolescent population. In future searches, | will be sure to identify the specific population of interest since children are a vulnerable population and require additional consideration regarding IRB approval. OASIS (n.d.a) indicated that limiting the literature search to topics related to your study will save time and help ensure alignment within the field of study relative to your degree program. Additionally, this office discussed the process of research problem and question development through a process of refinement that contributes to alignment. Finally, the OASIS (n.d.a) details the difficulties one would encounter when they have an out-of-scope research problem, further indicating that this is a common occurrence. The office again writes about the importance of alignment of the research question within the area of study. Walden University Office of Research & Doctoral Studies (2015, January 23) recommends focusing on the quality of the resources and tools that you find regarding the area of interest. Focusing on the quality can increase the opportunity of identifying a significant gap in the literature that will refine the research problem and question to contribute to the research work. Finally, the presenter recommends reading first-hand \"the classics\" to help position the area of interest within the gap to contribute.
