Question:
Respond to this argument!
For primary prevention I think it would be beneficial to have an education piece, for those who have a disability who are more likely to become victims of violence, to learn how to speak up for themselves. This training would teach them to learn how to feel comfortable to let a trusted adult know if someone around them is making them feel uncomfortable, which would hopefully help prevent future incidents. Also teaching them to use expressions while facing violence that could help deter the attack, such as "I'm going to tell on you". All of these could help prevent an act of violence on the person who has the disability. Of course the course should end with teaching the individual that if something happens that they should let someone know. This would be on the individual level.
A secondary and tertiary prevention would be to have an organized support group for those who are close to the victim. This will help them to learn how to help and support the individual. It would also be an opportunity for those close friends/family to get support and advice on how they are feeling about the situation, which will help to alleviate stress and feelings of being alone as a caretaker. This would be a part of the relationship level.
