My advocacy priority is to train healthcare providers on how to deliver culturally competent care, while my focus group is Asian Americans between the ages of 18 and 65 years who are diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension. On this note, the related nursing values are respect and compassion. Respect is one way that nurses are able to show cultural competence. By respecting other people's beliefs, practices, and preferences, they are able to consider these factors when developing and delivering their care plans for their patients (Stubbe, 2020). Meanwhile, nurses' compassion for others enables them to be more accepting of other people's perspectives. It allows them to listen without judgment (Chae et al., 2020).

The ethical principles that are most related to my chosen advocacy priority and population are justice and autonomy. Culturally competent nurses uphold the principle of justice by ensuring that everyone, regardless of his/her cultural background, is able to receive safe and quality care (Stubbe, 2020). Meanwhile, by honoring other people's cultures, nurses are also able to support their patients' autonomy and encourage them to assert their individuality and culture (Stubbe, 2020).

The Need to be on the Agenda

There are two reasons that the values and ethics of respect, compassion, autonomy, and justice demand that the issue of addressing the prevalence of chronic diseases among Asian Americans through a culturally competent education program be on the agenda. Firstly, they underscore the importance of providing care and education according to a person's beliefs and preferences. They bring to light the persisting issue of subtle racism in healthcare as evidenced by health initiatives, treatments, and education programs created and designed for the more dominant population group (Abrahamowicz et al., 2023). Secondly, by bringing the issue to the agenda, appropriate attention will be given to these minority groups (such as Asian Americans). Therefore, health policies that are more targeted and effective will be developed for these particular patient groups (Lawson, 2020).

Impact of Politics

Lack of awareness about a healthy lifestyle, lack of access to healthy food, and lack of access to early screening and preventive treatment are among the leading factors that contribute to the development and progression of diabetes and hypertension (Abrahamowicz et al., 2023; Yoshida & Fonseca, 2021). Hence, when it comes to ethnic minorities (such as Asian Americans), politics has the most impact on the area. This is because it is able to influence the development of health policies that affect the group's health, well-being, and access to care (Lawson, 2020). For instance, unequal allocation of funding for education and housing can affect their health literacy and access to safe housing. These factors can help shape people's perception of health as well as their health-seeking behaviors (Coughlin et al., 2020). Meanwhile, political decisions, particularly those concerning insurance coverage criteria, can determine the extent of healthcare services and preventive care that people from this particular group are able to receive. Hence, failure to receive early screening for diabetes or hypertension will also result in people from this specific group not being able to receive timely health interventions that could have prevented the progression of these chronic diseases (Lawson, 2020).
