Question:
Jesus exemplified two parts to servant leadership. 1. A visionary role and 2. An implementation role. A clear vision is needed for followers to understand who they are, where they are going so that followers can see the future to accomplish their goals. This is not a new concept for me at all. Great leaders always have a clear vision. As the textbook says, vision and goal are different. A goal is a specific event that once achieved, becomes a piece of history to be superseded by a new goal. When people do their best or have the best performance, they need to be motivated. That is not just some consecutive small goals but also a big picture of who they want to be.
The meaning of that the servant leader should be a performance coach would show how important the leader has a responsibility for their followers to follow what the leader said. Leading people is not one-way communication. When leaders lead people successfully, there should be a trusted relationship between them. Those EGO factors (fear, pride) are the obstacles to build a good relationship. When a leader leads people, it is not an order but it would be an indication or a good model. Followers easily find the leader’s EGO and can not focus on any good vision or goals. Also, leaders are human beings so that they can not focus on leading people when they reject you with their EGO either. However, in any relationship, how the person treats you it what you treat him/her. When you treat them as what you want to be treated, you could build a good relationship and lead them successfully.
