Responde to these two peer comments with thoughts questions concerns agree/disagree regarding this post: consider and explain your thoughts, questions, and concerns about this post:What are some strengths and/or concerns when using intelligence testing as benchmarks to get into college, to place people in jobs, or to compare cultures or genders? What are some pros and cons for using it for educational or vocational placement, cultural comparison, gender comparison (refer to text reading and video clip)?
Peer 1:Before going too in depth with this I think it's important to note that many IQ tests aren't actually called IQ tests. I think that alone changes the result for many people than if you were to tell them it was an IQ test. This is comparable to the category 4 versus the category 1 individuals that were referenced in the video. When people know that they are being judged or how people are judging them it often changes the outcome due to lack of self esteem etc.
While intelligence tests are a way to get a gauge on where individuals are at, it only gauges certain parts of their intelligence. It shows the facts that are known, not how individuals reach a solution or how they would work through something. There is so much more to intelligence than simply being able to rattle off a few facts. I am in no way saying this that these tests are useless. It is beneficial to see how individuals retain information learned. Different situations simply require different perspectives and/or material.
Peer 2: Using these kinds of testing are not accurate for everyone, because not everyone tests the same way. Some individuals do really great with testing and others just freeze under the pressure even though they know the material front to back. Hands on is the best tester. The profesor said if someone wants to be a college professor then give them an assignment on how would you present this to a class, to see how they do. People are smart and some individuals just do better with hands on then they do with testing. The I.Q. tests are what I call blockers, because they block a lot of smart individuals from doing something or passing something just because they are not good at testing. The strength of the testing is only beneficial for those who can handle testing well. In my opinion I do not think that these tests are accurate of how someone preforms or how well they can do something. The tests is designed to give someone an estimate of their cognitive skills and logical thinking but they can potentially give a inaccurate score of an individuals I.Q. and cause anxiety and low confidence in an individual.
