Response and reflect on the following 2 post:
1. Chapter Five is one of the most essential chapters in our textbook. Chapter Five is an important read because it deeply discusses the process of reading and writing. Reading is more than just picking up a book and reading the words on the page; writing is more than picking up a pencil and putting words on a piece of paper. The process of reading and writing includes very intentional strategies for the students to succeed in reading and writing. For example, chapter five, on page 87, discusses using reading logs/journals. I remember being in fifth grade and meeting with our designated book club throughout the week. After we read the chapter in our book and reflected on that chapter, we would then have to go back to our seats and complete our reading logs/journal entries for that chapter. The journal entries and reading logs helped me develop my comprehension skills.
The videos in the content folder this week were very informative. One video that stood out was Ms. Courtney Chan in her first-grade classroom. The lesson's objective was for her first-grade students to edit the opinion writing of their peers. The opinion piece example Ms. Chan used was which meal was the best meal to purchase from McDonald's. As she opened her lesson, she had a fantastic hook. Ms. Chan described how she went to the doctor for a checkup, and the doctor used a checklist to ensure she was healthy. In the lesson, Ms. Chan encouraged the students to be "doctors" and use the checklist to ensure their partner's writing was acceptable. Allowing the students to pretend they were doctors is a great way to keep first-graders involved and engaged. This lesson would be a helpful strategy and lesson to use in my future classroom one day. In addition, this allows for excellent partner work. From personal experience during observation hours, the students enjoy working with partners.
The week five lecture from Dr. Bowling contained a lot of helpful information that I can take into my future teaching career. One thing that stood out to me from the lecture is that students should read from a wide-variety of genres and formats. The statement from our lecture brings me back to my veteran teacher interview. Mrs. Weber, my veteran teacher, encouraged students to have the opportunity to read various texts to expand on their thinking skills and language. I will ensure I have a vast library for my students to choose from in my future classroom.
2.In Chapter 5, it was discussed how important the process of reading and writing is. I understand this very well as someone who works in a Kindergarten class. Right now, we are beginning to sound words out and read short sentences. Our students are able to achieve this because my co-teacher and I put a lot of time and effort into teaching the kids the proper process.
In Chapter 5, many different reading strategies were discussed, such as shared reading and guided reading. During shared reading, the book states," Is often incorporated in content areas in addition to reading for primary teachers who are self-contained. Shared reading can be implemented with all grade levels. Primary teachers often incorporate "Big Books" that contain colorful illustrations and large print that is visible for both large and small groups, which allows students to read along." Bowling (2023). Teaching Reading and Language Arts: An Effective and High-Powered Approach (2nd ed.). Kendall Hunt Publishing. In guided reading it states that it is "when working with small groups of students and sometimes with their entire class. When implementing guided reading with small groups of students, the teacher asks the students to read books that are based on or slightly above their reading level orally and at the same time, individually."
