It would be an understatement to say that communication plays an integral role in the success, or lack of success within an organization. Information systems and the data therein enable more efficient communication and offer the ability to easily share information (Picincu, 2018).
On a lower level, these information systems can assist managers to perform their duties more effectively by improving interpersonal communication, facilitating problem-solving, promoting individual learning, and giving a boost to the organizational control. Systems may also aid communication inter-organizationally, between employees who work in different sections or departments, for example (Alter, 1976).
A function of management within an organization is the gathering and distribution of information. Information systems may make this process flow more smoothly by allowing managers to communicate expeditiously. While email is a quick and efficient means of communication, and information system can give an organization/manager the ability to store pertinent documents in a file that allows for the appropriate employees to view them. In turn, changes can be made and a manager can then forward this new data to the targeted audience (Markgraf, 2019).
As someone who works for the government in the law enforcement field and has also served in the military, I have seen first-hand the effects that poor communication can have on a group of individuals. Morale will falter, which may cause the work environment to become toxic. This usually leads to disgruntled employees who are uninterested and unproductive. I hope to start my own business one day and would absolutely utilize what I have learned from this course as it refers to the use of information systems to promote healthy communication between all employees.
