One such area is our dietary department that is outsourced to Sodexo. Sodexo can benefit from managerial accounting, based on their daily activities and a need to meet the goals of the company (Hilton, 2011). According to Hilton, managerial accounting is "the process of identifying, measuring, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating information in pursuit of an organizations goals (2011). On a regular basis Brian and his team collaborates on the meals that will be served. Managerial accounting can provide data on suppliers that were used in the past and their prices and the quality of the produce and food. This will help Brian and his team decide on the best supplier to use. From a planning perspective, managerial accounting will help Brian determine the amount of staff he will need to meet the daily needs of the hospital for meals. Recently Brian sat down with the team and based on the price they were paying for coffee that was terrible, he was able to do a taste test and purchase better coffee at a fraction of the previous price. Another area that would be beneficial is the turnover rate and rate of pay. This will help Brian gain a better understanding of his area so he can find ways to motivate and empower his staff (Hilton, 2011). It is clear to see that managerial accounting goes beyond the dollars and cents. According to Hilton (2011), it is a very important component of any organization.
