Question:
REWRITE EACH PARAGRAPH ( MINIMUM 100 WORDS FOR EACH PARAGRAPH).
PURPOSE: I will be discussing the paper, "Model Minority at Risk: ExpressedNeeds of Mental Health by Asian American Young Adults," which was written by Sunmin Lee, Hee-Soon Juon, Genevieve Martinez, Chiehwen E. Hsu, E. Stephanie Robinson, Julie Bawa, and GraceX. Ma, as well as the paper, "Ethnicity, Gender, and the Education of Cambodian American Students in an Urban High School," by Kimmie Tang and Dennis Kao. The purpose of this week's readings is to get an idea of how labeling Asian Americans as the model minority can be damaging to their mental health and induce trauma.
CONCEPTS:
+ Mental health: "Participants reported several common sources of stress that affect the mental health of Asian American young adults including pressure to meet parental expectations of high academic achievement and live up to the ''model minority stereotype; the difficulty of balancing two different cultures and communicating with parents; family obligations based on the strong family values; and discrimination or isolation due to racial or cultural background. Young Asian Americans tend not to seek professional help for their mental health problems; instead, they use personal support networks—close friends, significant others, and religious community" (Lee et. al, 2008).
+ Trauma: "This type of intergenerational conflict can manifest in numerous ways, including differences in gender role expectations and the tension between family obligations vs. individual interests(Segal, 2002; Smith-Hefner, 1993; Takaki, 1998)—which in turn, can directly or indirectly influence the educational achievement of Cambodian American youth" (Tang & Kao, 2012).
