There has been a significant development in workers' compensation over the course of human history. There have been laws and programs developed and implemented over time to ensure that workers are fairly compensated if they are hurt as a result of their job or in furthering the ideals of the company they are employed by. Some early developments in workers' compensation were seen as early as eighteenth-century pirates, "Pirates were highly organized and entrepreneurial, so much so that a system of compensation was developed due to the ever-present chance of impairment" (Boggs, 2011, p. 1). This early and primitive form of a compensation program can be viewed as the great grandparent to today's worker's compensation programs, and helped to lay the foundation for workers' compensation development to become what it is today. Advancing through time, we see that there are well developed workers' compensation programs which exist today and are in place to protect employees from their employers who might otherwise try and escape their responsibilities of caring for and paying an employee who has been injured because of the work they perform, their work environment, or as a result of furthering the employer's best interests through employer directed activities. An example of how important a workers' compensation program is to employees and their families, we can look to the Triangle Shirt Waist Company incident of 1911. "With no workers' compensation system, family members had to turn to the courts in an attempt to force Triangle to compensate the injured and the families of the dead" (Boggs, 2011, p. 3). Had a modern workers' compensation program been approved and implemented during the time of this incident, the injured employees and the families of the deceased employees would not have had to fight the company in the court systems to only be awarded a paltry settlement of $75 in damages. Through developments in workers' compensation programs, employees are guaranteed more protection in today's society than they would have been promised 30, 50, and 100 years ago. Modern programs work for the employee to ensure they are fairly compensated for their lost time and for any disabilities they incur due to work performed, work environment, or their involvement in activities which are furthering the best interests of their employer.
