Rockfall barriers are required to be built for protecting a long stretch of highway in a hilly terrain. The barrier varies in height from 4m to Im depending on local topographic conditions. The standard design of the barrier ( including the main reinforcement) must fulfil the requirement that when struck by a boulder of 1.5min diameter (weighing 4700 kg) at a velocity of 10 m/'s the stem wall would not sustain permanent damage. A fixed-base condition may be assumed in the design of the stem wall. The barrier as a whole must also be checked for safety from overturning and sliding (assuming a rigid free-standing object). A reasonable and conservative assumption of COR = 0.2 and # = 20 degree may be assumed
