Environmentally, open-access fishing is harmful because it takes fish faster than they can reproduce, putting many species at risk of disappearing. Fishing methods like trawling can destroy important habitats where fish live and breed. Quotas can limit how many fish each person is allowed to catch, which encourages sustainable fishing. Marine protected areas, where fishing is not allowed, help fish populations and habitats recover. Reducing the number of fishing licenses, boats, or days spent fishing can also ease the pressure on fish stocks. Letting local communities manage fisheries gives people a reason to protect the resources they rely on. That said, not all policies work as planned. Subsidies, which are meant to help fishermen, can make overfishing worse by making it cheaper to fish too much.
