Question:
Sasha is 4 years old girl who recently enrolled in the Little Catalysts ELC . She has rare and severe form of Muscular Dystrophy and uses a wheelchair for mobility. In cooperation with Cassie ( Sasha's mother) the educators are developing an Individual Education Plan (EDP) for Sasha so she can achieve her goals and desired learning outcomes.
Now it's time to go deeper and develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for Sasha so that she can achieve her goals and desired learning outcomes.
You talk with Cassie about how you would like to develop an IEP for Sasha that has her feel a strong sense of belonging and connection in the service, and that you'd like to plan activities that would be of interest to Sasha.
To do this, you'll need to conduct a series of observations, details of which you'll share with Cassie to keep her up to date, "Are you okay for us to go ahead and conduct some observations?" you ask Cassie. She's very happy for you to go ahead and feels warmly welcomed by the effort you and the other educators are going to in order to include Sasha as an integral member of the Little Catalysts ELC Community.
Over the next week your educators will gently observe Sasha through daily routines and learning activities, from which you can collaborate with Cassie and Theo and as a team, develop an IEP that will inform how you program and plan for learning activities and design curriculum to include Sasha's goals too.
During Sasha's first week you've asked her educators to make some observations to support the development of an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Sienna, Anthony and Marissa share copies with you about their observations during activities they ran with Sasha in attendance.
You've also collaborated with Cassie to start an IEP for Sasha, so a copy of the draft so far is provided in the resources of this question.
1. Review the essential components of an IEP and list five (5) key areas of information included in an IEP plan.
2. Briefly describe the strategy you would use to develop an IEP.
3. What are the six (6) types of barriers to learning you will want your educators to assess in their observations of Sasha this week? Give an example of each type of barrier.
4. Identify two (2) barriers to learning and an example of each.
5. Describe how you would further investigate one (1) barrier to learning to better understand how to adjust Sasha's learning and play activities to overcome this barrier, using the information provided in the IEP.
E.g., If you were exploring an emotional barrier you might want to investigate how a child interacts in a range of settings, through different routines, at different times of the day, notice patterns of behaviour particularly around triggers, etc.
