Scenario You have been asked as part of your work experience to research various industrial alloys, ceramics, composites and plastics. The Engineer in charge requires various types of information for the technical report. Your initial task is to investigate and report on the types and reasons for the degradation of industrial alloys and plastics. The Engineer requires an in-depth description of the types of degradation and the process involved. The Engineer also requires you to carry out one destructive and one non-destructive test. The destructive test is a tensile test on a plastic sample and a metal one. The non- destructive test is a dye penetrant test on a welded metallic test piece. The Engineer not only requires the calculations for the tensile test, the Engineer also requires an in- depth description of the methods used and an explanation of the standardisation procedures. What you Need to Do: Describe the process and variables involved in the failure of metals. Select one polymer and explain the process of degradation associated with it and how it might affect the behaviour of the material. Describe a process of degradation that may affect ceramics. A ductile stainless-steel pipe support that supports a pipework system on an offshore oil rig has failed in service. The support is never stressed above the yield strength of the material, yet the failure appears as a brittle fracture. Predict the likely cause of failure of the support, EXPLAINING IN DEPTH the mechanics of the failure and how it may be prevented. Carry out routine mechanical testing (tensile). Describe the process with the aid of clearly labelled sketches. Complete calculations related to this testing process. Using the results obtained from tensile tests carried out on a polymer, determine the sample: the ultimate tensile strength the limit of proportionality a. b. the percentage elongation d. the yield point e. Youngs modulus of elasticity C. Carry out a dye penetrant test on a metallic test piece. Explain the processes you used and report your findings.
