Scope and Purpose:

Students will have the opportunity to learn more about their own career choices in the hospitality industry through interviewing industry leaders. Students will submit a research paper of their findings.

Assignment:

Students will interview a departmental hotel or restaurant manager in the students particular field of interest. Students must contact and set up an appointment with the departmental manager and find answers to at least ten (10) questions asked of them. Students must then give summaries of each answer given and also comment on the information given in the interview that directly impacts the students career decision. The following questions must be asked:

1. Tell me about your background in the hospitality field and how this has affected your present career.
2. How would you describe your management philosophy or the role you play?
3. What do you look for in hiring new employees?
4. How important is team building and staff support in your management priorities in serving guest needs?
5. Explain how providing excellent guest service contributes to a making a profit?
6. Why is education important in considering potential candidates for positions?
7. What personality traits would you consider important for a successful career?
8. What successful experiences have contributed to your career advancement?
9. What have you found difficult about your managerial duties?
10. Any advice you would give for students entering the hospitality industry?

Each student will be called upon to provide a brief presentation to the class of their individual interview experience. This presentation will describe the process of getting, doing and summarizing the interview. These presentations will all be done on April 4 in class.
