ADDRESSING OPERATIONAL CONSTRAINTS THROUGH CONTEXTUAL LEADERSHIP AT A KWAZULU-NATAL PUBLIC HOSPITAL- CASE STUDY
Dr Sandile Tshabalala, CEO for Prince Mshigeni Memorial Hospital (PMMH) in KZN, South Africaconsidered the problem of perceived resource constraints at his institution as he drove through the lush green winding hills of Cato Ridge. He reflected on the meeting, at which he had had to account for some difficult issues facing the hospital. These included poor service delivery, resulting in patients singing and dancing in protests, to protest long queues at the pharmacy and hospital as employees are dissatisfied with prevailing working conditions. The CEO, when he accepted the position as CEO of a Public Hospital vowed that he would take decisive strategic action and would not accept an excuse of resource constraints any longer. He was determined that the Hospital should retain its Glory. His challenge would be to change the mindsets of all stakeholders, most especially health care workers and patients.
