SECTION A COMPULSORY QUESTION (15 marks) QUESTION ONE (15 marks) Case Study CaribAir is a Caribbean airline carrier providing passenger travel and cargo delivery to the USA. The shipper is expected to call in a reservation to CaribAir and provide information on each piece of cargo, namely, the dimensions, description, point of origin and contact information. A record is created in the reservation database once a reservation is made. All cargo must arrive at the Cargo Section within three hours of scheduled flight departure accompanied by a receipt indicating that payments have been made to the airline for this specific service. An agent at the Cargo Section, upon acceptance of the items of cargo and following all security procedures will check the Airline Flight Information System to enquire whether the aircraft has ample space to take the cargo and to confirm the departure time. Once the aircraft can accommodate the cargo, a machine-readable barcode is printed with all the cargo details and the flight information. The machine-readable bar code is attached to each piece of cargo. All pieces of cargo are placed on the conveyor belts and taken to a holding area near the Ramp Section. A manifest providing the details of all items of cargo accepted for air freight must be sent electronically to the Federal Aviation Authority at least 60 minutes prior to departure for all flights to the USA. The supervisor of the Cargo Section is responsible for doing this FAA transmission. Clearance notification from the FAA comes directly to the Cargo Section. If the FAA objects to some aspect of the cargo being shipped, an objection notification is sent to the Cargo Section. Depending on the nature of the objection, personnel from the Cargo Section may remove the particular piece of cargo and notify the shipper of the objection. Prior to departure, a staff member from the Cargo Section will take two copies of the manifest to the supervisor on duty in the Ramp Section. As the cargo is loaded, the bar code reader at the Ramp Section reads the barcode and a shipping record for each item of cargo loaded is created in the shipment database. The ramp supervisor will check-off the items on the manifest and update the shipping database. He will send the copy of the manifest to the supervisor of the Cargo Section and keep the original document. Once the shipment has been loaded onto the aircraft, shippers can log onto CaribAirs website and track their cargo from the shipment database. a) Draw a Context Diagram of the Cargo Shipping Process from the perspective of the Cargo Section at CaribAir.
