CASE STUDY
Mildred Bull is a union delegate with Lada Bag Company Limited. She has been suspended by her supervisor, Merckle Bandaloo for insubardination by letter dated June 10th,2017. The suspension is to last until June 25,2017. No consultation was made with the Union House and Miss Bull had no intention of taking the suspension quietly. She turns up at the factory on June 11,2017 but was barred from entry by the sccurity guards who were told to prevent her from entering upon the company's premises.
When word got around about Mildred's suspension, workers walked off the job. Management of the company issued orders that the workers should immediately returt to their job or all who walked off would be dismissed for having abandoned their jobs. The Union was called by the workers and they arrived on the scene to lend support to the workers who bave taken this sudden industrial action. It was while at the scene that the Union was made fully aware of the recent developments involving Mildred's situation.
The Union felt that management's decision to suspend Mildred and their subsequent threat to fire the workers were not in keeping with good labour relations practices as prescribed by labour regulations. If need be, they will be seeking the intervention of the relevant unit up at the Ministry of Labour to ameliorate the situation and if not settied, wo place it in the hands of the statutory arbitration machinery for final resolution.
