SECTION A Instructions: Answer ALL the questions from this section Case Study # 1 Beth has just been assigned to the Training Department as one of two (2) Senior Training Officers. They are required to work together in supervising a team of 10 intern trainers. She is excited at the prospect of working in a new department, not to mention the added fringe benefits and increased salary! She was disappointed however, when the Head of Department, Dr. White, indicated that she would have to share office with Amanda, the other Senior Operations Officer as there is a space constraint in the company presently. The office had two desks, fully equipped with computers, printers and telephones. There was also a communal worktable and a small refrigerator. Beth began her new role, but after the first week of sharing an office with Amanda, she was beginning to feel uncomfortable. Amanda was very self-centred and often insists on playing his music as she says it inspires her creativity. She often delegate responsibility to Beth and seldom listens to her ideas or thoughts. She also speaks loudly on the phone and Beth is often subjected to hearing her conversations. Being new, Beth was not sure how to approach her. She has tactfully asked Amanda, on several occasions, to lower her music and phone conversations. However, she seemed not to have taken her seriously and persisted, showing no regard for Beth's requests. She had even written a number of training proposals and it her suggestions for improving their systems were ignored. In working with the interns' trainers, Amanda often dominated the discussions and subtly belittled Beth's ideas. She was often very friendly with the male interns and would often visit their desks and make small talk during work hours: which made Beth very uncomfortable. Additionally, the tasks and responsibilities of the department were neglected. Beth tried to identify the shortfall. However, Amanda thought she would worry unnecessarily. Consequently, Beth's work had fallen behind and she must now resolve this matter finally. She unwillingly brought the matter to the attention of Dr. White. Using good conflict resolution and negotiation skills and language, assist Dr. White in working through Beth and Amanda's issues, arriving at a plausible and amicable resolution to the problems that Beth was experiencing with the objective to increase the productivity levels of the Training Department Questions A.
