Section A
Select the most suitable answer.
Answer all questions. You are allowed to use a Hard Copy of BS 8110: Part I and BS8110:
Part III. State the assumptions where it is necessary.
A two-story house consisting of braced frames has columns on a grid 4.5m5.5m,
supporting beams of dimension 600mm300mm in one direction only, and a one-way
slab of 150mm thickness. The roof also has a beam-slab arrangement identical to other
floors. The columns are of dimension 300mm300mm and the soffit to soffit height of
floors is 2.8m; the height from the top of the pad foundation (designed to resist moment)
to the soffit of the first-floor beams is 3.5m.
Unit weight of concrete is 24kNm-3,C35 concrete, High yield steel, mild exposure, 2.5
hrs. fire resistance.
Loadings: Imposed loads on the roof and the floors are 1.75kNm-2 and 2.5kNm-2
respectively, allowance for partitions and finishes are 1.5kNm-2 each.
a. Design the internal column in the ground floor segment against SLS durability and
SLS fire resistance.
b. Calculate the ultimate axial load.
c. Check whether the column is short or slender.
d. Calculate the area of longitudinal reinforcement.
e. Find the number of bars for longitudinal reinforcement and do the necessary checks.
