One prominent theory of individual health behavior is the Health Belief Model HBM which posits that an individuals healthrelated actions are influenced by their perceptions of a threat to their health and the perceived effectiveness of the recommended behavior in reducing that threat An example of how the Health Belief Model has been applied in public health practice is its use in promoting breast cancer screenings In a study by Champion and Skinner 2008 the researchers applied the Health Belief Model to understand womens beliefs and behaviors related to mammography screening for breast cancer The study found that women who perceived themselves to be at higher risk of breast cancer were more likely to undergo mammography screening Additionally women who believed that mammography was effective in detecting breast cancer early and reducing mortality were also more likely to engage in screening behaviors The Health Belief Model was appropriate for this example because it helps identify the factors that influence ...
