The first three movies were in 1977 (Star Wars), 1980 (The Empire Strikes Back) and 1983 (Return of the Jedi). The movies are set in a galaxy far, far away and a long time ago. The plot revolves around the Rebel Alliance (the good guys, most everyone above) and the Empire (the bad guys, led by Darth Vader and the Emperor Palpatine). Luke learns that he has a special power to use "the Force." He joins his first instructor in the Force, Obi-Wan, and Han to rescue Leia. C3P0 and R2D2 are robots. Yoda is another instructor. Franchise merchandise includes toys, fast-foot giveaways, theme-park rides, and video games. In Star Wars, Jar Jar Binks provides comic relief by walking and talking in an odd manner. Princess Leia's hair looks like cinnamon buns. Star Wars is about good vs. evil. The Force and the Jedi are both good. The Empire is evil. Wizards often help the hero in tales from long ago. Usage of the Force is like wizardry. One of the classic themes of tales from long ago is about a hero going through a maze. The path that Luke follows to destroy the Death Star is like a maze. The mythic maze-guarding Minotaur is half man, half beast. Darth Vader is half man, half machine. Jabba the Hutt is based upon Signor Ferrari, Sydney Greenstreet's character in the 1942 film Casablanca. C3PO was first modeled to talk like a used car salesman. In the movies he sounded and acted like a butler. Lucas wanted a "used universe." Props and sets were made, then aged with battle scars and repairs. Obi-Wan's robes were patterned after a monk's robes. U.S. Navy pilots from 1957-69 wore orange jumpsuits. Rebel pilots in Star Wars wore orange jump suits. The back story of Emperor Palpatine resembles the rise to power of Adolf Hitler. Palpatine sounds Roman. The first fictional accounts of space travel date to Earth's second century. It symbolizes the passing on of power when Obi-Wan gives Luke's father's light saber to Luke. Damsels in distress inspire men. Princess Leia's distress call starts Star Wars. Luke and Han help this damsel. When the emperor, Vader, and Luke battle, Vader kills the emperor and sacrifices himself to save his son. Lucas says his son's favorite book is Dinotopia. In Dinotopia, there is a dinosaur named Bix. As a kid, Lucas liked stories about frontier life, comic books, and movie adventures. The hero of Star Wars was originally a Jedi master named Mace Windu. The fanzine Starlog printed articles about Star Wars for a decade after the movie was released. The Jawas deal in junk, including R2-D2 and C-3PO. The Jawas speak an electronically manipulated form of Swahili, a language in Africa. Greedo, the alien shot by Han in the cantina, speaks an electronically manipulated form of an Incan language.
