Salespersons new to real estate sell properties for less and take longer to close sales than experienced salespersons. They should complete six months of experience before working independently.

With 35 years of experience as a broker-manager, I had to correct problems that newly licensed agents caused during a sale. Not knowing what to say when asked a question they did not know the answer to. Instead of saying, Let me find out and get back to you, they winged it and made gross misrepresentations.

The audience for this argument is new, young real estate salespeople who have yet to gain experience.

Challenges to this argument are if new and younger salespeople are required to complete six months of experience after earning their license to practice, most will become disillusioned. Young people are impatient. They want to see immediate results and immediate income. They expect that everything should be done quickly and instantly. As a result, the aging boomer population might find they wont have anyone following them on this career path. The requirements to obtain a real estate license are relatively fast and easy. Requiring the younger generation to have more than six months of experience may deter them from entering real estate as a career. Another challenge is that technology is rapidly changing. New, younger agents dont want to spend time on outdated or antiquated business practices. They must learn from an older, experienced agent.

This essay aims to convince newly licensed agents that taking the time necessary to gain necessary experience in this specialized career will result in earning a higher income. Salespeople will experience better, repeat business, and be regarded as consummate professionals.

Previous sales experience will likely ensure success when changing careers into real estate. Coming from another job, such as a sales or retail background, often outperform those who do not. They bring the knowledge and skill set theyve learned and are more productive.

More real estate education and experience equal higher income. Properties represented by experienced agents garner higher commissions, and the properties sell in less time than new agents. Sellers employ agents who know how to negotiate to get them more money for their homes in less time than an inexperienced agent. Competing with a veteran agent on many levels is difficult for a new agent. Providing accurate information and service creates a solid footing for a long-term real estate career.
