Sexuality is contested terrain because "groups struggle to implement sexual programs and alter sexual arrangements and ideologies." (Vance. 42) The state had shown interest in studying the field of sexuality as well as the people. Movements such as 'My Body my Choice' movement that supports women's abortion rights. Other movements that support "prostitution, masterbation, social purity and the double standard..." (Vance. 42) Have also been started due to the increase in sexuality studies and interest. Vance theorizes the "cultural influence model" of sexuality and gender as "basic material" and "a naturalized category." (Vance. 44) He also states that culture is viewed to either encourage or disencourage sexuality within this model. As well as gender and sexuality blend easily within this model, compared to what other theories may presume. Vance later on criticizes the "cultural influence model" by stating that culture may seem to shape people's sexuality, sexuality is also stated to be universal and biological. (Vance. 44). Vance also claims that anthropology has been proven wrong with the assumption that sexuality will be subject to change due to historical and cultural forces. This theory has been proven wrong which is why Vance continued to criticize it.
