Organizational Behavior Research Methods
Organizational behavior research is the study of individuals, groups, and organizations' behavior. Understanding their behaviors is very important as it helps companies enhance operational efficiency. One of the benefits of doing so is it helps establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships. There are several tools they use to discover as to how they behave. Researchers have working hypotheses based on their own observations, readings on the subject, and information from individuals within organizations. It is a tentative explanation of relationship between two or more variables.
Researchers will test the hypothesis using different research methods such as case studies, field studies, laboratory studies,meta-analyses, machine learning, and surveys. Case studies are in-depth, detailed examination by collecting data and actual events meticulously using systematic approach. Field studies are also an effective way to learn what is truly going on within the organizations. These are conducted in actual organizational settings with a population of workers. Unlike field studies, laboratory studies are conducted outside the organizations. Although it can also help test the hypotheses, it would only give the research limited information whether it would work out or not because they are not observing an actual situation or event. Machine learning focus on the use of data and algorithms that can be used to iteratively learn from a given data set and understand patterns and behaviors. Meta-analysis is a statistical analysis use by the researchers that combines the results of multiple studies about a given topic. I am personally interested on this type of testing as it will give more information or a more definite answers from other researchers as well. Surveys are one of the primary methods management researchers use to learn about Organizational behavior. It allows to efficiently collect honest feedback to a number of questions.
These methods are very helpful to the researches. However, there's also a measurement issues that could arise and it is inevitable. It is very important to understand the difference between reliability and validity. These are both about how well a method measures something. Reliability refers to the consistency of a measure while validity refers to the accuracy of the measure. It refers to the underlying truth of the measurement. It is also important to recognize the difference between correlation and causation. Correlation simply means that two things co-vary, but correlation does not equal causation.
Data are the foundation of Organizational Behavior research methods. It is used to describe extremely large data sets according to four characteristics: volume, variety, velocity, and veracity. Additionally, it is very important to understand different analytics approaches to answer Observation Behavior questions. It can be descriptive, predictive, or prescriptive in nature.
I see this section fitting into the entire study of Organizational Behavior because it helps answers questions about organizational situations through systematic collecting and analysis of relevant data to provide evidence for the events within the organizations.
