I reviewed the 2024-2025 School Improvement Plan for Key West High School of Monroe County. The plan identifies the five following topics as their priorities: algebra, 9th grade ELA, 10th grade ELA, geometry, and attendance. Specifically outlined are the increase in algebra class failures since the previous school year, as well as the increased failures in 9th and 10th grade ELA. This achievement is noted to be already well below the state average, and the goals were aligned to increase the passing rate to also be above the state average. While the focus on achievement is positive, I appreciated that one of the goals include attendance, and that another identified goal is creating a positive culture and environment in the school. While the program chosen to meet this goal does have some critics, Postive Behavior and Intervention System (PBIS) addresses chronic absenteeism, which could benefit the school in working towards their goal.
