I do not mean to come off as cold hearted, but I firmly believe people do not care how companies treat their employees. Many of us choose to go to Walmart because of the huge cost savings it provides us, or better yet the convenience. Walmart keeps low prices by not paying their employees as well, and limiting the training they get prior to working the floor. For example the most popular grocery store in Florida, is Publix. When one shops at Publix you expect a certain level of service along with a high quality product. The aisles are bright, all of the employees uniforms are neat and clean, and they are eagerly seeking customer interaction. On the other hand Walmart's are like entering a like a mini town. There is traditionally always lines at the cash register, the aisles are filled, and it is harder to find an employee especially one who is eager to help you.
Covid-19 is a perfect example of how society sees essential workers like Walmart, Target, and grocery store employees. Unfortunately many of them are not properly compensated even when there is a worldwide pandemic. Did many individuals limit their shopping without a doubt, did some choose to do curbside pickup yes, but other people did not care and casually strolled aisles without social distancing purchasing items like TVs and video games (where those essential items... no). To me this proves that society really does not care about how companies treat their employees whether it is compensation or overall work conditions. I am not a believer in unions in this type of environment because I believe they keep wages lower rather than working for your raise each year. One would be frustrated if they constantly show up to work, and they get the same raise of someone who is habitually late.
In my final personal opinion, these entry level jobs are not meant for careers. These jobs are meant to teach you entry level work ethic for example showing up on time, being kind and courteous to your coworkers and customers, and learning entry level skills. With hard work, working at Walmart can grow into a beautiful career, but unfortunately people are not willing to do what others will not to do. This is when you stand out from your peers when you do what others won't. Again my personal opinion is the average member of society could care less about how a company compensates their employees. After all think of how crowded Walmart's were during the heart of the spring this year.
