Shipping alone, an individual client order may have only enough volume to transport under less-than-truckload (LTL) rates. Consolidating the orders of multiple warehouse clients, however, allowed the warehouse to gain the economies needed to ship via truckload carrier, which charged a lower rate per 100 pounds (hundred weight or cwt.) compared to the LTL cost for individual shipments. The more accurately the warehouse identified and scheduled consolidated orders, the better the profit margins it would receive for its consolidation services.
