Shortened Example: My CriticalReflection -Career Learning Experiences
"I chose to engage in two on-campus workshops (1) Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) (2) ALLY training and one MOOC (Futurelean - Introduction to Critical Thinking) to focus on my skill development for communication, teamwork, and critical thinking respectively. For MHFA we went through what is mental health, what kinds of conditions people suffer (for example depression and anxiety) and the signs to look for if someone is experiencing this - agitation, work absences, flat affect, etc. We did a number of activities including a role-play intervention with a person experiencing suicide ideation. In selecting these courses I was not sure that I had targeted the correct skills to focus on to advance my career in the field of environmental science as I have only just begun to understand the industry and the range of jobs available to me. I also did not really understand the nuances of each of the skills and what they entailed to consider whether or not I felt they were strengths of mine or if I needed to develop more of an understanding. This made me anxious as the reflection has the most weight to pass the unit and I wanted to do well. The two on-campus workshops were easy to register for and information on the location easy to navigate. Upon arrival, the facilitators were warm and welcoming andthe sessions were informative. This made me relax, take notes and absorb the information. The online course was tricky for me in that I couldn't initially log in and locate the progress wheel so I could screenshot the minimum six hours of engagement. Once, I did that, however, the course was easy for me to navigate. I noticed that my learning was more enjoyable online as I could travel at my own pace and revisit information accordingly if I needed further understanding. I respond to the written word more readily than listening to someone speak. I was relieved to have the learning experiences finished and felt each provided some new insight and learning of myself as a developing professional, my skillset, and my ability toarticulate my knowledge and capabilities. Responding
From the MHFA workshop,Inow have an industry-relevant certificate to show that I can provide mental health first aid at a beginner's level. During the workshop, I learned about the signs of distress and how to initially approach someone using positive communication skills. In a situation where a person may be suicidal, I learned as a first responder to first and foremost actively listen. You do this by using a soft voice, reflecting back to them what they are saying, and reassuring them that I understand and am there for them. For example, we role-played an intervention where I had to listen to and support a person in distress. I found this difficult in that I didn't feel comfortable that I was reflecting - I feel more like I just wanted to solve the problem and tell them what to do! This gave me a have a greater appreciation of the importance of keeping up to date with relevant information on mental health but also practicing my own communication skills in my everyday life so that when issues arise I can trust my own skills and feel in control of a complex situation and be the conduit for that person to get professional help. Relating
I feel okay about my ability to communicate in difficult circumstances with people experiencing distress but initially, I didn't really feel that it relatedto my career in environmental science. However, when reflecting on some of the related skills such as leadership and teamwork, I can see it is absolutely relevant as I will always be working with people, and most likely as part of a team. Wellbeing is important to all of us and can be impacted anywhere at any time, including at work with colleagues. As I do see myself as taking a leadership role as I advance my career - I now have insight into where I need to continue my communication skills to ensure I take a life-long approach to my skill development. Advancing my communication to having difficult conversations in the workplace can only be of benefit to becoming a leader and valued team member. Reasoning
I plan to incorporate active listening approaches in all my group work whilst at university as well as in my close personal relationships to build my confidence and reduce my solution focuses communication. I would also like to undertake some more credential-based learning in leadership to advance my ability to communicate across various audiences. Cross-cultural communication will be especially important as I will likely be connecting with people in the environmental sciencefield globally". Reconstructing
