Question:
Similar to the Confederate statues, the statue of Christopher Columbus is also a symbol of past and present bigotry. For indigenous communities specifically, it is a reminder of their conquest, which can be described as apocalyptic. The Columbus statue stands as a monument to the near genocide of indigenous peoples throughout the Americas and if left standing, it will remain a symbol of their continued oppression as indigenous peoples throughout this nation, as well as this continent, are disenfranchised, segregated, or they live in inadequate housing, they struggle with access to health care and are victims of continued violence. Removing the monument, therefore, serves several purposes. First, it confronts racism, and at present, it is not enough to be non-racist; we must be anti-racist. Second, removing this symbol of racism is a step in the right direction towards repairing the injustices committed against indigenous populations everywhere. Your task is to make a case for or against the removal of Confederate statues and statues of Christopher Columbus.
