Investigation: Motion on an Incline In this investigation.you will be predicting the forces acting on a pulley system on an inclined plane. and planning and conducting an inquiry investigation to test your predictions. Purpose To design your own investigation to test your predictions ofthe acceleration of a mass and analyze the relationship between the variableis) and the acceleration. Materials - Pulley on an incline plane simulation *Do not click on 'Show FBDs' or 'Show Numerical Values\" Design To accomplish this task, you must determine what type of data you need to collect, how you will collect it, and how you will analyze it. To determine what type of data you need to collect, think about the following questions: - What are the boundaries and components ofthe system you are studying? - How do the components ofthe system interact with each other? - Which factors might control the acceleration ofthe system? - How might an increase ofthe hanging mass affect the acceleration? - How could you keep track of changes in this system quantitatively? - What forces are acting on the masses? - What information will you need to be able to determine the acceleration? - What will be the independent variable and the dependent variable? To determine how you will collect the data. think about the following questions: - Howwill you change the independent variable during your experiment? - What other factors will you need to hold constant during your experiment? - Howwill you keep track ofand organize the data you collect? To determine how you will analyze the data, think about the following questions: - What types of patterns might you look for as you analyze your data? - How could you use math to describe a relationship between variables? - What type of calculations will you need to make? - What types of graphs and equations signify a proportional relationship? - What type oftable or graph could you create to organize your data? llnstructions Before you conduct your investigation. predict the forces and draw a FBD of your setup. Calculate the result that you expect for the acceleration of the system with the values you assigned in the simulation {Show your work]. Formulate a hypothesis that you are going to test in this investigation. Conduct your investigation. Record your results. Pepeat your investigation with multiple values. Analyze your data [see suggestions under Design) Provide a response to these discussion questions: a. Suppose we wanted to increase the amount of hanging mass, but wanted the system acceleration to stay the same as the previous trial. Suggest two other things we could independently change about the system to accomplish this. and explain why those changes would work. b. Suppose we wanted the system acceleration to change directions. but wanted to keep the angle the same as the previous trial. Suggest two other things we could independently change about the system to accomplish this. and explain why those changes would work. 9. Write a conclusion summarizing the results ofyour investigation. 10. Present your investigation in the format of a formal lab report Purpose. Materials, Hypothesis [Predictions FBDs and calculations], Procedure [what values did you set each variable to. etc). Observations. Analysis. Discussion. Conclusion. [Ur' WHW~P
