Solar hot water systems can be used in both commercial and residential applications. In Australia, solar hot water manufacturers model their nominal systems and submit the results of these models to the Clean Energy Regulator in order to claim small-scale technology certificates (STCS). That is, depending on their size, configuration (e.g. tanks, pumps, controllers), location, and usage, solar hot water systems can get one STC for every megawatt-hour of energy they are deemed to generate. In Sydney (Zone 3), a residential system with 2 flat plate collectors would typically be eligible for ~30 STCs. However, we cannot necessarily trust the manufacturers to accurately self-report STCs. Instead, the components must be independently tested by third party engineers (like you!) according to the Standards.
