TMK, a telecommunication company, tries to build toll-free call-in customer service centers which handle telephone reservations in different zones. TMK pays for the telephone rates that vary drastically depending on the zone of call origin and the location of the receiving center. So, selecting the location for each customer service center is extremely important. In a simplified problem, illustrated in figure 1, we want to find the optimum locations of customer service centers of TMK to minimize the total of call charges and center setup costs. Our simplified model includes 8 centers under consideration to cover 14 calling zones (see figure 1). Table 1 shows unit calling charges, rij from each zone j to various centers i, and the zone's call demand(load), dj Any TMK center selected can handle between 1500 and 5000 call units per day. Also, the daily cost of operation, fi, that differs depending on the center location is listed for each center, in figure 1. Develop a LP model that finds the optimum location of the TMK centers that covers all the zones with minimum cost. Solve the LP model in excel. Note that you can select one, two or as many as needed centers from 8 possible locations, shown in figure 1.
