Question:
Some might argue whether humanity is evil or good. First, one must ask what is good. What is evil? You save your child from death and despair by killing another person with a will to kill them...and if that person had lived to become a leader that saves thousands or millions, who did the good or evil? Twins born with the same mother and father normally have the same life experiences, yet one becomes a serial killer and the other a religious leader. Not genetics? There are some people that have a completely normal childhood but still commit evil acts. Some people may say it comes down to their upbringing, but if it was, then how come some people commit evil acts, but their siblings, who had exactly the same upbringing, don't?
Humans are uniquely adept at utilizing systems of symbolic communication such as language for self-expression, the exchange of ideas, and organization. Humans create complex social structures composed of many cooperating and competing groups, from families and kinship networks to states. Social interactions between humans have established an extremely wide variety of values, social norms, and rituals, which together form the basis of human society. Humans are noted for their desire to understand and influence their environment, seeking to explain and manipulate phenomena through science, philosophy, mythology, and religion.
So, the question is, what causes this "rotten apple" thing in the first place? Is evil learned, bred into us, by happenstance? Can this be discovered (evil in a person) who wants to be a police officer every time (before they are hired)? If not, then should we really be surprised when a "rotten apple" cop rises to the top?
