Sonya was a busy commodities trader on the Central Commodities Exchange. After a particularly harrowing week when markets were highly volatile, Sonya lost much sleep tracking prices on exchanges in Tokyo, Sydney, and London, as well as the great exchanges in the United States. At the close of business on Friday, Sonya felt she had earned a weekend of complete rest. She drove six hours to her cabin in the Northwoods, built a fire in the fireplace, propped up her feet, and began reading a detective novel. Late that night, a cold polar air mass swept into the American Midwest, bringing with it blizzard conditions and freezing temperatures. At about 11 p.m., snow was swirling outside Sonya's cabin and the temperature had dropped to 18 degrees below zero. At 10 p.m., Ollie's car broke down on an isolated road three miles from Sonya's cabin. Because the terrible weather had come suddenly, Ollie was not adequately dressed to brave the elements. Nevertheless, he tudged off into the deepening snow. After a while, Ollie became disoriented, and he staggered lost through the woods. Finally, at 11:15 p.m., through the swirling white flakes he spotted the light from Sonya's cabin. At the limits of his endurance, Ollie made his way to Sonya's cabin and began pounding on the door. An irritated Sonya got up and looked out the window and saw the haggard Ollie at the door. Sonya pulled the curtain shut, yelled, "Get lost, I'm here because I don't want to see ANYONE," and went back to reading her book. Ollie trudged off 30 yards from Sonya's cabin and then dropped in his tracks into the deepening snow. Ollie froze to death that night, and Sonya has been charged with his death.
