There are two different approaches to motivating. Quadrants and above show a negative approach to motivation. Managers can punish employees for doing the wrong thing, or they can tap into peoples' selfdoubts and selffears to get them to take action which will avoid those feelings. Quadrants and show positive approaches to motivation. Managers can either give employees external rewards for doing good work, or they can help people enjoy their work. Praise and expressions of appreciation are particularly powerful extrinsic motivators. Positive approaches to motivation are more effective, as negative approaches tend to decrease employee development and longterm performance. And the most effective positive approaches to motivation are found in Quadrant because those rewards tap into employee feelings and help make them committed to the organization.
